Manual VMFS creation on ESXi4.1 when using a partitioned drive

A quick post to aid my memory when this next comes up.

Was attempting to create a VMFS volume on a LUN originating from an EMC AX4 Array. Although not on the local controller the VMFS creation was failing with the error : 

“Error during the configuration of the host: Failed to update the disk partition information”

The resolution was to Follow the steps mentioned in the KB article 1001489.
